Chapter 4: The Secret Behind the Bookcase

I returned home at 3:17 p.m., carrying Arthur's letter, the brass key, and a question that had become impossible to ignore.

What had my husband promised his sister?

Daniel's car wasn't in the driveway, but Vanessa's white SUV sat beneath the maple tree. Through the front window, I could see her moving around the living room, rearranging the framed photographs on the mantel.

She had taken down the picture of Emily's kindergarten graduation.

In its place was a photograph of herself standing beside Daniel at some charity gala, both of them smiling beneath a chandelier.

I stood outside for a moment, watching her.

Then I unlocked the front door.

Vanessa turned, holding the graduation photograph by its frame.

“Oh, you're back.””

“Where's Emily?””

“Your mother picked her up from school. Daniel said it was arranged.””

My mother hadn't mentioned anything about collecting Emily.

I immediately called her.

“Mom, is Emily with you?””

“Of course, sweetheart. She asked if she could spend the afternoon here. Is everything all right?””

I closed my eyes in relief.

“Yes. Please keep her until I come get her.””

“Claire, what's happened?””

“I'll explain later. Just keep her with you, please.””

After hanging up, I turned to Vanessa.

“Why did you take Emily's photograph down?””

“Because it doesn't match the room.””

“Put it back.””

Vanessa tilted her head.

“You know, this is exactly what Daniel complains about. You make everything into a confrontation.””

“And you make yourself comfortable in a house you don't own.””

Her fingers tightened around the frame.

“Be careful.””

“I'm done being careful with you.””

I took the photograph from her hands and returned it to the mantel.

Vanessa watched me, her face hardening.

“Daniel told me you went to see his father's lawyer.””

“He did?””

“He called me immediately after speaking to you. He was furious.””

“Funny. He sounded frightened to me.””

Her expression flickered.

Then she laughed.

“Arthur was an old man who couldn't accept that his children had grown up. He made ridiculous promises to everyone. You shouldn't build your life around his final fantasies.””

I stared at her.

“Did he promise you this house?””

“He promised me plenty of things.””

“Did he promise you Emily's inheritance?””

Vanessa's smile vanished.

For a second, neither of us moved.

Then she stepped closer.

“You have no idea what happened before you came into this family.””

“Then tell me.””

“No.””

She walked past me, heading toward the stairs.

“I'm going to lie down. When Daniel gets home, we'll discuss whether you should continue living here.””

I watched her disappear upstairs.

Then I went into the study.

Daniel's enormous bookcase covered nearly the entire wall behind his desk. It held business books, family photographs, and several leather-bound volumes he had inherited from Arthur.

I moved the desk chair aside and ran my fingers along the woodwork.

Nothing.

I checked the shelves, examining their edges for a seam or hidden latch.

Still nothing.

Arthur's brass key was small, old-fashioned, and slightly tarnished. I tried it in the desk drawers, the filing cabinet, and the lock on a narrow cabinet beneath the window.

It fit nowhere.

I was beginning to wonder whether I'd misunderstood the note when I noticed something strange.

The bookcase stood about two inches away from the wall on its right side.

I crouched and examined the gap.

Behind the lowest shelf, nearly hidden by a stack of old magazines, was a small brass keyhole.

My heart began to pound.

I inserted the key.

It turned.

A soft click sounded behind the wood.

I pushed against the bookcase, but it didn't move. Then I pressed the lower panel beside the keyhole.

A narrow compartment sprang open.

Inside was a sealed plastic envelope, a small black flash drive, and a thick stack of documents secured with a rubber band.

The first document was a property deed.

The second was a bank authorization form.

The third was a photograph of Vanessa standing outside a house I had never seen before.

On the back, Arthur had written:

The property she claims to have inherited is not the property she has been trying to acquire.

I unfolded the next document.

It was a letter from a real estate attorney dated eight months earlier. The letter described an attempted purchase of a property using funds connected to a company registered under Vanessa's name.

The purchase had been delayed because the source of the funds required additional verification.

A handwritten note in Arthur's familiar script appeared in the margin.

Ask Daniel why the down payment came from Emily's protected account.

I sat down so abruptly that the chair rolled backward.

Emily's protected account.

I had never known she had one.

Arthur had set aside money for his granddaughter before his death. He'd mentioned a small educational fund once, but Daniel had told me it was nothing substantial and that Arthur had handled the arrangements privately.

I had assumed the fund was separate from our household savings.

Now I wasn't sure of anything.

I picked up the bank authorization form.

It bore Daniel's signature and Vanessa's signature as authorized representative. The form referenced a protected financial arrangement and included instructions for transferring funds to a property company.

But the document was stamped *PENDING VERIFICATION*.

I couldn't tell whether the transfer had been completed.

I photographed every page before placing them back into the envelope.

Then I plugged the flash drive into my laptop.

A folder appeared.

Inside were scanned bank statements, emails, property records, and audio files. The documents were arranged by date, beginning nearly a year before Arthur's death.

One email caught my attention.

It had been sent from Vanessa's account to Daniel's personal email address.

The subject line read:

*OUR AGREEMENT*

I opened it.

Daniel,

You promised me that once Father was gone, the house and the trust arrangements would be handled the way we discussed. I agreed to keep quiet about what happened with the old account because you said you would make everything right.

The money needs to be transferred before Claire starts asking questions. If she discovers the original paperwork, we both know Father left enough evidence to destroy us.

I have done what you asked. Now you need to do your part.

Vanessa.

I read it again.

Then a third time.

The old account.

What had happened with it?

And why was Vanessa threatening her own brother?

I clicked the next email.

Daniel's reply was short.

The money will be moved. The house will be yours once the remaining documents are signed. Don't contact me about this through your usual email.

I pressed a hand over my mouth.

The room seemed to shrink around me.

Daniel hadn't simply given his sister money because she was struggling.

He had negotiated something with her.

Something involving our house, our daughter's inheritance, and an account I had never known existed.

I opened the audio folder.

There were three recordings.

The first was labeled with a date from six months earlier.

I clicked play.

Arthur's voice emerged through the speakers, weak but unmistakable.

“Daniel, I want you to understand what you're doing. This money belongs to Emily.””

My husband's voice answered.

“She won't need it for years.””

“That isn't the point.””

“Vanessa needs a fresh start.””

“And what does Emily need, Daniel? A father who knows the difference between helping his sister and sacrificing his child?””

There was a long silence.

Then Daniel spoke.

“I'm handling it.””

Arthur's voice hardened.

“No. You're hiding it.””

The recording ended.

I sat motionless, staring at the screen.

My father-in-law had confronted Daniel about the money before he died.

He had known something was wrong.

And he'd tried to stop it.

I opened the second recording.

This time, Vanessa's voice came first.

“You said the trust would be changed.””

Daniel replied, “It will be.””

“When?””

“When I can get the documents signed.””

“What about Claire?””

“She won't see anything until it's done.””

Vanessa laughed softly.

“And if she does?””

Daniel answered without hesitation.

“Then I'll tell her the house was always yours.””

I stopped the recording.

A sound came from the hallway.

The front door had opened.

Daniel was home.

I quickly removed the flash drive, gathered the documents, and slid them into my handbag.

Then I heard his footsteps approaching the study.

“Claire?””

I shut the laptop.

He appeared in the doorway, still wearing his work suit.

His eyes moved from my face to the open bookcase.

Then to the desk.

Then to my handbag.

“What are you doing?””

I forced myself to stand.

“Looking for something.””

His expression changed.

He crossed the room and pushed the bookcase shut.

“Did you open this?””

I said nothing.

Daniel looked at the brass key in my hand.

For the first time in eight years, my husband looked at me as though I were a stranger who had discovered something dangerous.

“Where are the documents?”” he asked.

I stepped backward.

“What documents?””

His voice dropped.

“Claire, don't play games with me.””

“Then stop lying to me.””

He reached for my handbag.

I pulled it away.

“Don't touch me.””

His hand fell to his side.

For several seconds, he simply stared at me.

Then his phone rang.

Vanessa's name appeared on the screen.

Daniel answered immediately.

“What?””

I watched his face change as he listened.

“No,” he said.

“She couldn't have found it.””

A pause.

Then, in a voice that made my skin crawl, he whispered, “Keep her there. I'm coming.””

He ended the call.

I stared at him.

“Keep whom where?””

Daniel picked up his car keys.

“Stay out of this, Claire.””

He headed toward the door.

I followed him into the hallway.

“Where are you going?””

He turned, his eyes flashing.

“To fix the mess you've made.””

Then he left.

I stood in the doorway, listening to his car pull away.

My phone vibrated.

It was a text from my mother.

Claire, your sister-in-law just called here. She says she's coming to pick up Emily because Daniel gave her permission.

I felt the blood drain from my face.

A second message appeared.

She's outside.

May you like

And then another.

Claire, she's telling me Emily belongs with her now.
