Chapter 1: The Footage She Never Expected
“Ethan has until Friday to get out of this house. I don't care if Marcus has to drag him out himself.””
Vanessa said it with a smile.
She was standing in the marble foyer of Marcus Hale's mansion, holding a crystal wineglass in one hand and her phone in the other. She thought nobody could hear her.
Unfortunately for her, the security cameras were recording everything.
And by the time Marcus watched that footage, he would discover that the woman he had trusted with his home, his finances, and his family's private affairs had been planning to destroy his son from the inside.
But the worst discovery wouldn't involve the house.
It would involve a woman who had been dead for eleven months.
My name is Ethan Hale. I'm thirty-two years old, and until recently, I believed my biggest problem was that my father's new wife hated me.
I was wrong.
Vanessa didn't simply dislike me.
She wanted me gone because I was standing between her and something she believed belonged to her.
My father's house.
My mother's belongings.
And possibly something much more valuable.
It started three months after my father, Marcus, married Vanessa.
My mother, Evelyn, had died after a long battle with cancer. She and Marcus had been married for thirty-one years. Their relationship wasn't perfect, but they had built a life together, raised two children, and turned a modest construction business into a successful property development company.
After Mom died, Dad changed.
He became quieter. He stopped having dinner at the table. Some mornings, I found him sitting in the garden, staring at the empty chair where my mother used to drink her coffee.
Then Vanessa appeared.
She was forty-six, elegant, charming, and exceptionally good at making people feel important.
She met Dad at a charity fundraiser.
Within six months, they were married.
I tried to be supportive.
I really did.
But the first time Vanessa and I were alone, she made it clear that I wasn't welcome.
“Ethan, sweetheart, don't you think it's time you found your own place?”” she asked one evening while rearranging the flowers in the dining room.
I looked up from my laptop.
“I have my own apartment. Dad asked me to stay here while we're finalizing the renovation plans for the company.””
Vanessa placed a white rose back into its vase.
“Your father says many things. Sometimes he doesn't realize how inconvenient they are.””
“Then you should discuss it with him.””
Her smile tightened.
“I am discussing it with you.””
I closed my laptop.
“I'm not moving because you want another bedroom.””
Vanessa leaned closer.
“Be careful, Ethan. This isn't your mother's house anymore.””
Those words stayed with me.
Not because they were particularly clever.
Because she had said them with such confidence.
As if my mother's death had erased every right she ever had in that home.
Two weeks later, things became worse.
Vanessa began complaining that I was disrespectful. She told Dad I was using the family credit card without permission. She claimed I had brought strangers into the house late at night.
None of it was true.
But Dad was exhausted from running his company, and Vanessa knew exactly when to approach him.
One evening, I found them arguing in the study.
“Marcus, I cannot live like this,” Vanessa said, pressing a tissue against her eyes.
“Your son treats me like an intruder.””
Dad rubbed his forehead.
“Ethan is still adjusting.””
“Adjusting? He's thirty-two years old. He has no reason to be living under our roof.””
“It's my house, Vanessa.””
“And I'm your wife!””
I stood in the doorway.
“What's going on?””
Vanessa immediately turned toward me.
“Perfect timing. Perhaps you can explain why you think it's acceptable to make your father's life miserable.””
I stared at her.
“What exactly did I do?””
“You know what you did.””
“Then tell me.””
She looked at Dad.
“See? This is what I mean. He always makes me look unreasonable.””
Dad sighed.
“Ethan, can we talk tomorrow?””
I wanted to argue.
Instead, I nodded and walked away.
But before I reached the staircase, I heard Vanessa whisper something.
“Soon, Marcus. This house needs peace again.””
That night, I couldn't sleep.
Around midnight, I went downstairs to get water.
A faint light came from the security office near the garage.
The door was slightly open.
I found Daniel Brooks, the head of household security, sitting in front of several monitors.
Daniel had worked for my father for nearly fifteen years. He had known me since I was a teenager.
“Couldn't sleep?”” he asked.
“Apparently, neither could you.””
He smiled briefly.
Then he looked toward the main hallway.
“Ethan, can I ask you something?””
“Sure.””
“Have you been entering your father's study after midnight?””
I frowned.
“No. Why?””
Daniel turned his monitor toward me.
A recording showed someone walking into the study three nights earlier.
The figure wore a dark coat and carried a small leather handbag.
Vanessa.
She approached my father's desk, opened the bottom drawer, and removed a thick folder.
She photographed several pages with her phone.
Then she put everything back.
“What's in that folder?”” I asked.
Daniel shook his head.
“Property documents, I think. Your father asked me to review the footage because some papers went missing.””
I leaned closer.
The timestamp showed 12:43 a.m.
“Did Dad see this?””
“Not yet.””
“Why not?””
Daniel hesitated.
“Because I found something else.””
He switched to another recording.
This time, the footage showed Vanessa standing in the foyer with her phone against her ear.
Her voice came through the camera's audio system.
“Ethan has until Friday to get out of this house. I don't care if Marcus has to drag him out himself.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
Then came the sentence that changed everything.
“Once he's gone, Marcus won't have anyone asking questions about the money.””
Daniel paused the recording.
“What money?”” I whispered.
“I was hoping you knew.””
Before I could answer, footsteps sounded behind us.
We turned.
Marcus stood in the doorway wearing his dressing gown.
“What are you two doing?””
Daniel immediately stood.
“Sir, I was reviewing the footage.””
Dad looked at the monitor.
Then at me.
“Why are you watching my wife's movements?””
I stepped forward.
“Dad, you need to see this.””
Vanessa's voice filled the room again.
This time, Dad listened without moving.
When the recording ended, his face had gone pale.
He stared at the screen for several seconds.
Then he said something I had never heard him say before.
“Daniel, save every second of that footage.””
“Of course, sir.””
Dad turned to me.
“Ethan, don't mention this to Vanessa.””
“Why?””
He looked toward the staircase.
“Because I want to know what she's hiding before she realizes we've found it.””
And just then, Daniel's phone vibrated.
He checked the screen.
His expression changed.
“Mr. Hale, there's something else.””
He placed the phone on the desk.
A photograph appeared.
It showed Vanessa standing outside a bank.
Beside her was a man Dad recognized immediately.
Marcus took one step closer.
His voice dropped to a whisper.
“Why is she meeting him?””
The man in the photograph was Richard Cole.

My father's personal financial adviser.
And Richard had supposedly retired six months before Vanessa entered our lives.
