Chapter 8: The Room Where It All Began
The old Bennett office smelled exactly as I remembered.
Dust.
Old carpet.
And the faint scent of coffee that seemed permanently embedded in the walls.
I stood in the entrance at 8:46 p.m., staring at the narrow hallway where I had once carried secondhand computers up three flights of stairs.
Nine years earlier, this building had been my entire world.
I had worked sixteen-hour days here.
I had slept on the office couch during product launches.
I had eaten cheap sandwiches while negotiating contracts that could either save the company or destroy it.
And Christopher had been there.
So had Evelyn.
So had Daniel.
Now someone had moved $1.9 million into a holding company registered at this address.
I wasn't alone.
Laura and two security officers monitored the building from a vehicle across the street. Richard was connected through a secure line.
Daniel stood beside me.
“You really think someone will show up?”” he whispered.
“I think someone wants us to believe they will.””
We entered the old conference room.
The furniture had been covered with white protective sheets.
The walls still displayed faded photographs from the company's early days.
One photograph caught my attention.
It showed me standing beside Christopher.
We were both smiling.
He had one arm around my shoulder.
Behind us stood Evelyn, holding a bottle of champagne.
Daniel approached the photograph.
“Christopher was happy back then.””
“So was I.””
“He used to say you were the only person who believed he could build something important.””
I looked at him.
“Did you believe him?””
Daniel nodded.
“Absolutely.””
I turned away.
“Then why didn't you help him when he asked about his shares?””
Daniel had no answer.
My phone vibrated.
A message from Laura.
*We have movement outside. Black SUV. Two occupants.*
I walked toward the window.
A black vehicle had stopped near the entrance.
The passenger door opened.
A woman stepped out.
Vanessa.
She wore a long beige coat and carried a small handbag.
Daniel swore under his breath.
“She's here.””
Vanessa entered the building without knocking.
“Marcus.””
Her voice echoed through the hallway.
I stepped into the conference room.
“You came.””
She looked at Daniel.
“Why is he here?””
“Because he knows where the money went.””
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“Daniel, you really are determined to destroy everything.””
He moved closer.
“You emptied the account.””
“I moved my money.””
“That's company money.””
“Not anymore.””
I held up the transfer confirmation.
“Bennett Legacy Holdings?””
She looked at the paper.
Then she smiled.
“You finally found it.””
“Why did you transfer the money there?””
“Because it belongs there.””
“According to whom?””
“According to the original agreement.””
I shook my head.
“There's no legitimate agreement.””
Vanessa placed her handbag on the table.
“Marcus, you keep pretending you were the only person who built this company.””
“I never said that.””
“Christopher helped you.””
“Yes.””
“Evelyn sacrificed years of her life for you.””
“Yes.””
“And Daniel risked his career to protect the business.””
I stared at her.
“Is that what you call stealing $2.6 million?””
She rolled her eyes.
“Always the same, Marcus. You reduce everything to money.””
“Because someone took $2.6 million.””
She stepped closer.
“Do you remember what you told me when we were married?””
I said nothing.
“You told me that when the company succeeded, we would never have to worry about anything again.””
“I meant we would be financially secure.””
“You meant you would be rich.””
“That isn't the same thing.””
“To you, perhaps.””
She looked around the old office.
“You built this place with people who believed in you. Then you became successful and pushed everyone aside.””
“Christopher sold his shares.””
“No, he didn't.””
I held up the photograph of the original agreement.
“Then why does the transfer section remain blank?””
Vanessa's eyes flickered.
She recovered quickly.
“Because Evelyn handled the paperwork.””
“And you benefited from it.””
“Someone had to.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Vanessa, stop.””
She turned sharply.
“Stay out of this.””
“You told me the money was part of a legitimate investment.””
“It was.””
“You told me Marcus had approved everything.””
“He should have.””
Daniel stared at her.
“You used me.””
Vanessa laughed.
“You wanted to be important. You wanted Marcus to notice you. I gave you the opportunity.””
Daniel's face reddened.
“I made you my wife.””
“And I made you a CEO.””
He went silent.
That sentence told me more than any document could.
Vanessa turned back toward me.
“You know what the funniest part is? I never needed all of Bennett Global.””
“Then what did you need?””
She smiled.
“Leverage.””
She opened her handbag and removed a small black folder.
Inside was a copy of the voting trust agreement.
“Christopher's twelve percent was never supposed to belong to him permanently.””
I stared at her.
“Explain.””
“Evelyn arranged everything years ago. Christopher received the original shares because she wanted him to help establish the company. But he was young, inexperienced, and easily influenced.””
“He was my partner.””
“He was her son.””
“And she had no right to take his ownership.””
Vanessa shrugged.
“That's something the courts can decide.””
I looked at the agreement.
“Why did you need the money?””
She leaned against the table.
“Because the trust needed capital. The account was supposed to be funded through legitimate company transactions.””
“Legitimate?””
“Daniel was supposed to approve the payments, and Evelyn was supposed to handle the paperwork. Nobody was supposed to notice.””
Daniel looked at her in disbelief.
“You told me the money would be returned.””
Vanessa ignored him.
“Then you started asking questions.””
I stared at her.
“So you transferred the remaining funds tonight.””
“Correct.””
“Where?””
“Somewhere you won't find it easily.””
I took a step toward her.
“Vanessa, this ends tonight.””
She laughed.
“No, Marcus. It ends when I decide.””
She placed another document on the table.
“This is the original voting agreement. It gives me authority to represent Christopher's twelve percent.””
I examined the signature.
It looked familiar.
Too familiar.
I remembered Christopher telling me that he had watched Evelyn forge my signature.
But something about this document was different.
The signature at the bottom wasn't mine.
It was Christopher's.
And beside it was a handwritten date.
October 17.
I looked up.
“Where did you get this?””
“Evelyn.””
“Does Christopher know about it?””
“He signed it.””
“No, he didn't.””
Vanessa's smile disappeared.
“How would you know?””
“Because I spoke to him.””
For the first time that evening, Vanessa looked genuinely frightened.
“When?””
“Today.””
She grabbed the document.
“What did he tell you?””
“Enough.””
She stepped backward.
Then her phone rang.
She glanced at the screen.
Evelyn.
Vanessa answered.
“What?””
A voice came through loudly enough for me to hear.
“Get out of there. Now.””
Vanessa frowned.
“Why?””
“Christopher is at the headquarters.””
Vanessa went pale.
I stepped forward.
“What did you say?””
But Evelyn had already hung up.
Vanessa shoved the documents into her handbag.
“Move.””
Daniel blocked the doorway.
“Not this time.””
She slapped him.
The sound cracked through the empty office.
“Get out of my way!””
Daniel didn't move.
I looked toward the entrance.
One of our security officers appeared.
“Mr. Bennett, the police are on their way.””
Vanessa turned toward the window.
Then she laughed.
“You still don't understand, do you?””
I stared at her.
“What?””
She raised her phone.
“Evelyn already has the original documents.””
My blood ran cold.
“Which documents?””
“The ones that prove Christopher transferred his shares.””
I looked at the folder in her handbag.
“Those are copies.””
She smiled.
“Exactly.””
Then she pushed past Daniel and hurried toward the entrance.
Security stopped her before she reached the street.
She struggled, shouting that she had done nothing wrong.
I didn't move.
My attention was fixed on the phrase she'd just spoken.
The original documents.
If Evelyn had them, she might be holding the only evidence capable of establishing who legally owned Christopher's shares.
My phone rang.
Richard.
“Marcus, Christopher just arrived at headquarters.””
“Is he safe?””
“Yes. But there's a problem.””
“What?””
“He brought the original share transfer agreement.””
I closed my eyes.
Finally.
Then Richard continued.
“And Marcus, it has your signature.””
My stomach tightened.
“That's impossible.””
“I know. Because Christopher says the document is real, but the signature isn't.””
I looked at Vanessa being escorted outside.
“Then what is it?””
Richard's answer was almost a whisper.
“It's a document you signed years ago for a completely different purpose. Someone removed the original final page and attached it to a fraudulent transfer agreement.””
I stared at the old photograph on the wall.
Someone had taken a genuine document, manipulated it, and used it to rewrite the ownership of my company.
But who had done it?
And why had Christopher kept the original evidence hidden for so long?
Richard answered the second question before I could ask.
“Marcus, Christopher says there's another person involved.””
“Who?””
Richard hesitated.
May you like
Then he said:
“Your former attorney. Michael Reeves. He's been receiving payments from Bennett Legacy Holdings for seven years.””
