Chapter 9: The Truth About Emily's Final Night

The next morning, I sat in Mr. Harris's office with a cup of coffee I hadn't touched.

The blue envelope lay open on his desk.

Inside were bank statements, copies of emails, handwritten notes, and Vanessa's signed confession.

I kept returning to the same sentence.

I chose Robert over her.

"What does that mean?"" I asked.

Mr. Harris folded his hands.

"It means Vanessa was involved in the financial misconduct. More importantly, Emily believed she had information that could expose both of them.""

I looked at the confession.

"Did Vanessa know Emily was dying?""

"Yes. She was aware of the diagnosis.""

"Then why would she risk everything?""

Mr. Harris removed another document.

"Because Robert had been promising her a substantial payment if she helped him obtain access to Emily's assets.""

I stared at him.

"How substantial?""

"According to the correspondence, approximately $150,000.""

I leaned back.

"One hundred and fifty thousand dollars?""

"That was the proposed amount.""

I felt sick.

My wife had been fighting cancer, worrying about our daughter, and trying to protect her future.

Meanwhile, someone she trusted was calculating how much money they could make from her death.

"Did Emily know?""

Mr. Harris nodded.

"She discovered the payments shortly before she entered hospice. She began collecting evidence and contacted me.""

"Why didn't she tell me?""

"She was afraid the situation would become dangerous. She specifically asked me not to involve you until the evidence was secured.""

I stared at the desk.

I remembered those final weeks.

Emily had been unusually quiet.

Sometimes she would wake up in the middle of the night and check the front door.

I had assumed it was the medication.

Now I wondered whether she had been afraid someone would come looking for her.

"Was Vanessa at the hospital the night Emily died?""

Mr. Harris opened another folder.

"According to the hospital visitor records, yes.""

I felt my chest tighten.

"Why?""

"She claimed she was there to support you.""

I remembered that night.

Emily had been struggling to breathe. I had stepped outside to speak with the doctor.

When I returned, Vanessa was standing beside the hospital bed.

She'd told me Emily had been sleeping.

I had thanked her.

I had no idea.

Mr. Harris slid a printed email across the desk.

It was dated four years earlier.

The sender was Robert Miller.

The recipient was Vanessa.

Emily has the original transfer records. She knows about the missing funds. We need to get the documents before she gives them to Harris.

Vanessa's reply was beneath it.

I'll speak to her tonight. She won't tell Daniel. She trusts me enough to listen.

I read the exchange twice.

"Did she speak to Emily?""

Mr. Harris nodded.

"There's a statement from a nurse who remembered an argument in the room.""

My throat tightened.

"What did the nurse hear?""

"She said Vanessa was asking Emily to sign something. Emily refused.""

I closed my eyes.

"What happened afterward?""

"Vanessa left. Emily asked the nurse to call her sister, Laura.""

I looked up.

"Did Laura come?""

"Yes. She arrived shortly before midnight.""

I stood.

"I need to talk to her.""

Mr. Harris nodded.

"I've already arranged for her to come here.""

Twenty minutes later, Laura entered the office.

She looked older than I remembered. Her hair was shorter, and there were dark circles beneath her eyes.

But when she saw me, she immediately embraced me.

"I'm sorry, Daniel.""

I held her tightly.

"I should have listened when Emily tried to tell me something was wrong.""

Laura pulled back.

"She didn't want you to carry the fear. She knew you were already struggling.""

We sat down.

Laura placed a small photograph on the desk.

It showed Emily in her hospital bed.

She looked exhausted, but she was smiling.

Beside her sat Laura.

On the back was a handwritten message.

The truth will find its way to Nia.

I looked at Laura.

"What happened that night?""

She took a shaky breath.

"Emily called me at 10:15 p.m. She told me Vanessa had come to the hospital asking her to sign a document.""

"What document?""

"Something that would have given Robert authority to manage certain assets.""

I shook my head.

"Why would Emily sign that?""

"She wouldn't. She told Vanessa that everything had already been placed in Nia's trust.""

Laura wiped her eyes.

"Vanessa became angry. She said Emily was destroying Daniel's future by refusing to cooperate.""

I felt my hands curl into fists.

"What did Emily say?""

"She told Vanessa that Nia would never be used to pay off Robert's debts.""

I stared at the photograph.

Laura continued.

"After Vanessa left, Emily asked me to find the original hospital photograph. She said there was something hidden in it that would help you understand what had happened.""

I frowned.

"We found the photograph. There was a number on the back.""

"Room 214?""

I nodded.

Laura opened her handbag and removed a small plastic sleeve.

Inside was another photograph.

It looked almost identical to the one Nia had shown me.

But this one had a small tear along the bottom edge.

Laura turned it over.

"Emily gave me this copy before she died.""

I examined it.

There was something strange about the paper.

A faint outline ran along the bottom.

I looked closer.

"Is there something inside?""

Laura nodded.

"Emily told me not to open it until the time was right.""

Mr. Harris brought a small pair of document scissors.

Carefully, Laura opened the sealed edge.

A tiny folded slip of paper fell onto the desk.

I unfolded it.

There were four lines.

A bank name.

A branch number.

An account reference.

And a sentence in Emily's handwriting.

Daniel, if Vanessa ever asks for Nia's inheritance, check the account she opened in her own name.

I looked up.

"Vanessa has another account?""

Laura nodded.

"Emily believed Robert had been transferring money through it.""

Mr. Harris picked up the paper.

"That may be the missing link.""

I stared at the account reference.

"Can we find out where the money went?""

"We'll need to report it and obtain the appropriate records," he said.

"But this gives us a direction.""

My phone vibrated.

A message from an unknown number appeared.

Daniel, please don't believe everything Laura tells you. Emily wasn't honest with you either. You need to hear the truth from someone who was there.

A second message followed.

Ask Laura what happened during the last ten minutes before Emily died.

I slowly raised my eyes.

Laura had gone pale.

"Who sent that?"" she asked.

"I don't know.""

She stared at the phone.

Then she looked down at her hands.

I waited.

"Laura?""

She began crying.

"There's something I never told you.""

My stomach tightened.

"What?""

Laura wiped her cheeks.

"Emily didn't die while she was asleep.""

I couldn't move.

"What are you saying?""

"She woke up shortly before the end. She asked me to bring Nia's photograph and the music box. Then she asked me to promise something.""

I leaned forward.

"What did she ask?""

Laura looked directly at me.

"She asked me to promise that if Vanessa ever became part of Nia's life, I would watch her carefully.""

My heart pounded.

"Why?""

"Because Emily had discovered Vanessa was already planning to marry you.""

I stared at her.

"That makes no sense. I barely knew Vanessa at the time.""

Laura shook her head.

"Daniel, she knew you long before you thought you knew her.""

The room seemed to shrink.

Laura reached into her handbag again.

This time she pulled out a printed photograph.

It showed Vanessa standing outside the hospital.

Beside her was Robert.

The timestamp was from the evening Emily died.

But there was something else.

In the background, standing near the hospital entrance, was me.

I recognized the clothes I had been wearing.

I had been at the hospital that night.

I had been standing just a few feet away.

And I hadn't seen them.

Laura pointed to the photograph.

"Emily saw them together through the hospital window. She asked me to take this picture after she realized they were working together.""

I stared at the image.

"Why didn't you show me?""

"Because Emily begged me not to tell you until I had proof. She was afraid Robert would destroy the evidence and make you look responsible for the missing money.""

I felt my throat tighten.

Then Laura said the words that changed everything.

"Daniel, Emily didn't leave you because she stopped trusting you. She was trying to protect you from a man who had already chosen your family as his next target.""

I looked down at the photograph again.

For four years, I had believed my wife's final days were filled only with pain and sadness.

Now I was discovering she had spent those days fighting to protect us.

My phone rang.

This time, it was the investigating officer.

"Mr. Carter, we need you to come to the station.""

"Why?""

"We've received new information concerning Vanessa Carter's financial transactions.""

I stood.

"What information?""

The officer paused.

"We located the account Emily identified. There's been a recent withdrawal.""

"How much?""

"One hundred and fifty thousand dollars.""

I felt the blood drain from my face.

"When?""

"Yesterday morning.""

I looked at Laura.

She covered her mouth.

The officer continued.

"Mr. Carter, there's another problem. The withdrawal was made using an authorization document bearing your signature.""

I stared at the phone.

"I never authorized it.""

"We understand. But the bank's records show the money was transferred to an account belonging to someone named Nia Carter.""

For one brief second, I felt relief.

Then the officer added:

"The account was opened under your daughter's identity, but the contact details belong to Vanessa.""

I looked at Laura.

Then at Mr. Harris.

And finally, at the photograph of Emily.

Vanessa hadn't simply tried to steal my daughter's inheritance.

She had used my daughter's identity to move the money.

May you like

And now I knew what she had been searching for all along.

The original document that could prove it.
