Chapter 2: The Paper She Was Forced to Sign
The emergency department smelled of disinfectant and stale coffee.
Emily lay on a hospital bed beneath a thin white blanket while a nurse attached monitors to her arm.
I stood beside her, still wearing my pajamas and slippers.
A nurse named Rachel gently examined her abdomen.
"Emily, can you tell me where the pain is strongest?""
Emily pointed toward the lower right side.
"Does it hurt here?""
She flinched.
Rachel immediately stopped pressing.
"Okay, sweetheart. We won't push there anymore.""
I watched the nurse's expression.
"Is it serious?""
Rachel gave me a reassuring smile, but her eyes remained focused on Emily.
"We're going to run some tests and find out what's happening.""
Blood was drawn. An IV was started. Then a doctor ordered an ultrasound and additional imaging.
The waiting was unbearable.
I sat beside Emily, holding her hand while she stared at the ceiling.
"Mom?""
"I'm here.""
"Is Dad coming?""
I hesitated.
"I don't know.""
"Please don't tell him everything.""
I turned toward her.
"Emily, sweetheart, what do you mean?""
She looked toward the curtain separating us from the hallway.
Then she whispered, "He already knows something is wrong.""
My entire body went still.
"What?""
Emily's eyes filled.
"He took me to a clinic.""
I felt as though someone had pulled the floor out from under me.
"When?""
"Three weeks ago.""
"Three weeks ago?""
She nodded.
I tried to keep my voice calm.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because he said you'd get upset.""
"Emily, you were sick. Why would I get upset with you?""
She started crying.
"He told me it was private. He said I shouldn't make things worse by telling you.""
I held her hand tighter.
"Did a doctor examine you?""
"Yes.""
"What did they say?""
Emily swallowed.
"They did an ultrasound.""
My heart began pounding.
"What did they find?""
She looked at me with terrified eyes.
"A lump.""
For a moment, I couldn't speak.
"What kind of lump?""
"I don't know. The doctor said I needed more tests. Dad got angry.""
"Angry at the doctor?""
She nodded.
"He said the doctor was trying to scare us and charge us more money.""
I felt sick.
"Did he take you somewhere else?""
"No. He told me not to talk about it.""
Before I could ask another question, my phone vibrated.
Mark.
I answered immediately.
"Where are you?"" he demanded.
"At the hospital.""
There was a pause.
"What?""
"Emily is being examined. She's in terrible pain.""
"Why would you take her there without calling me?""
"Because she was vomiting on the bathroom floor!""
"Laura, listen to me. Don't authorize anything until I get there.""
I stared at the phone.
"She's your daughter.""
"I know who she is.""
"Then why haven't you asked how she's doing?""
"Because I need to understand what's happening before they start charging us for unnecessary procedures.""
I ended the call.
A moment later, a text appeared.
*DON'T AUTHORIZE ANYTHING UNTIL I GET THERE.*
I showed it to Rachel, who had returned with a clipboard.
She read the message without commenting.
"Mrs. Bennett, the medical team will explain every procedure. Right now, our priority is determining why Emily is in so much pain.""
I nodded.
Then Emily tugged at my sleeve.
"Mom, there's something else.""
I leaned closer.
"What is it?""
"Dad made me sign a paper.""
My stomach tightened.
"What paper?""
"At the clinic.""
"What did it say?""
"I don't know. He told me it was just permission for the doctor to talk to him about my results.""
"Did you read it?""
She shook her head.
"He said I had to sign it quickly because he was busy.""
I closed my eyes for a second.
"Did he make you sign anything else?""
Emily hesitated.
Then she nodded.
"He said it was about the tests.""
"What tests?""
"I don't know.""
Her voice became smaller.
"Mom, I asked him if you needed to know. He said you weren't allowed to find out.""
I felt tears gathering behind my eyes.
"Sweetheart, you never have to keep medical secrets from me.""
Emily began sobbing.
"I'm sorry.""
I kissed her forehead.
"You have nothing to apologize for.""
A few minutes later, Dr. Patel entered the room holding a tablet.
She was in her early forties, with tired eyes and a calm voice.
"Mrs. Bennett, we've reviewed the initial imaging.""
I stood immediately.
"What did you find?""
She pulled a chair closer.
"There's a sizable mass near Emily's right ovary.""
The words seemed to echo around the room.
"A mass?""
"Yes. We don't yet know exactly what it is. It could be benign, but given its size and Emily's symptoms, we need further investigation.""
"Could it be cancer?""
"We cannot determine that from the scan alone. We need additional tests and likely a specialist consultation.""
I gripped the edge of the bed.
"Is she going to be okay?""
Dr. Patel looked at Emily before answering.
"Our immediate concern is her pain and the possibility of complications. We're treating those while we arrange the next steps.""
Then she noticed the paper Emily had mentioned.
"Did you say there was paperwork from another clinic?""
Emily nodded.
Dr. Patel asked me to see it.
I didn't have it.
Emily explained that Mark had put the document in a folder inside his desk at home.
But she remembered the clinic's name.
Dr. Patel asked the hospital social worker to help contact the clinic and request the records.
Then my phone rang again.
Mark.
I ignored it.
A text followed.
*I'M ON MY WAY. DO NOT LET THEM TOUCH HER.*
Dr. Patel read it over my shoulder.
"Mrs. Bennett, are you concerned about your husband's reaction?""
I looked at Emily.
She was watching me with frightened eyes.
"Yes," I whispered.
Dr. Patel nodded and quietly asked the nurse to document our concerns.
Then she turned back to Emily.
"Sweetheart, I need to ask you something. Did anyone explain the document before you signed it?""
Emily shook her head.
"No.""
"Did your father tell you what it was for?""
"He said it would keep Mom from worrying.""
Dr. Patel exchanged a glance with the nurse.
A few minutes later, the clinic sent over a copy of the document.
The doctor read it once.
Then again.
Her expression changed.
"Mrs. Bennett," she said slowly, "I think you need to sit down.""
My knees nearly gave way.
"What is it?""
She placed the paper on the bedside table.
"It isn't simply permission for your husband to receive medical information.""
I looked at the signature at the bottom.
Emily Bennett.
My fifteen-year-old daughter.
Then I saw the section above her signature.
And I screamed.
Because the document stated that Mark had requested a delay in further diagnostic testing—and had obtained authorization to transfer Emily's medical records to a private facility without my knowledge.
But that wasn't the worst part.
The document also contained a statement claiming Emily had refused additional testing herself.
My daughter stared at it.
"I never said that," she whispered.
Dr. Patel gently folded the paper.
"I believe you.""
May you like
Then she looked directly at me.
"And Mrs. Bennett, we need to find out why your husband wanted this documented.""
