Chapter 9: The Truth About the Night I Lost Everything

I couldn't speak.

For five years, I had imagined what I would say if Michael were somehow standing in front of me again.

I had imagined shouting.

Crying.

Asking why he had left me alone.

But now that I could hear his voice, every word disappeared.

"Michael," I finally whispered.

"Hello, Danny.""

My eyes filled.

"Where are you?""

"I can't tell you over the phone.""

"Are you alive?""

He gave a quiet laugh.

"Last time I checked.""

I covered my mouth.

"Why didn't you come back?""

Silence.

Then he said, "Because I thought they would kill you if I did.""

I gripped the wheelchair.

"Who?""

"Andrew. Peter. And someone else.""

"Victoria?""

A pause.

"Victoria was involved, but she wasn't the person making the decisions.""

I looked toward her.

She was crying silently.

"Michael, where are you?""

"Westbrook's old records office. There's a building behind it. I'm staying with someone who helped me after the accident.""

"Give me the address.""

"Not yet. I need you to listen first.""

I closed my eyes.

"All right.""

"The night of the accident, I was driving behind you because I wanted to warn you about Andrew. I had found the original patient database and the bank records.""

"I remember.""

"Andrew knew I had the evidence. He followed us in the SUV.""

My chest tightened.

"He hit my car.""

Michael continued.

"Not hard enough to kill me. He wanted to force me off the road. But the truck came around the bend, and everything happened too fast.""

I remembered the impact.

The sound of glass.

The crushing metal.

Then darkness.

"Why did they declare you dead?""

"Because Peter arranged it.""

"How?""

"After the collision, I was taken to the hospital. I was unconscious. Andrew and Peter knew I had evidence that could destroy them.""

He paused.

"Peter had a connection at the hospital. He changed my identification records and arranged a transfer to Westbrook under a restricted identity.""

I felt sick.

"And they told everyone you died?""

"Yes.""

"Your family?""

"They were told I couldn't be identified immediately. Then they received the death confirmation.""

I stared at the floor.

"I attended your funeral.""

"I know.""

"I helped bury an empty coffin?""

Michael's voice broke.

"I'm sorry.""

I closed my eyes.

For years, I had visited his grave.

I'd spoken to him when I couldn't sleep.

I'd blamed myself for surviving.

And he had been alive.

"Why didn't you contact me after you recovered?""

"Because I wasn't safe.""

"Five years, Michael.""

"I know.""

"Five years!""

My voice echoed through Emily's apartment.

Michael said nothing.

Finally, I continued.

"Do you know what it was like waking up every morning knowing my best friend was dead? Do you know what it was like trying to learn how to stand again while believing I was the only one who made it out?""

"I know, Danny.""

"No, you don't.""

"I've watched you.""

My breath caught.

"What?""

"From a distance. I saw the foundation. I saw the rehabilitation programs. I saw the scholarship announcement tonight.""

He paused.

"I saw you standing.""

I looked at my legs.

"How?""

"Someone sent me a video.""

I felt a strange mixture of anger and relief.

"You watched me rebuild my life, and you never called?""

"I was afraid.""

"Of what?""

"That Andrew would find out.""

I took a breath.

"Michael, Andrew already knows we're looking.""

"I know.""

"Then come home.""

There was another long silence.

Finally, he said, "There's something you need to understand about Sarah Parker.""

I glanced at Emily.

"Her mother?""

"She was the reason I survived.""

Emily stepped closer to the phone.

"What do you mean?""

Michael's voice softened.

"Emily?""

She began crying.

"Yes.""

"Your mother was the bravest woman I ever knew.""

Emily covered her mouth.

"She told me you were dead.""

"I know. I asked her to.""

"Why?""

"Because I needed someone outside the hospital system to keep the original evidence safe. Sarah helped me. She visited me secretly during my rehabilitation. She also helped me recover the recording.""

Emily looked at the wooden box.

"She kept it all these years.""

"She kept her promise.""

Emily began sobbing.

"She never told me.""

"She wanted you to have a normal life.""

Michael paused.

"She also wanted you to finish nursing school.""

Emily looked toward me.

I nodded.

"She will.""

Michael continued.

"Daniel, there's one more thing. The original financial records are not in the storage unit.""

I frowned.

"Where are they?""

"With Peter Wallace.""

"Why would he still have them?""

"Because he has been using them to blackmail Andrew. They contain proof that the patient data was sold to several companies, including Meridian.""

Richard closed his eyes.

Michael continued.

"Richard wasn't the only person involved. There were hospital executives, lawyers, and investors. Andrew was just the man coordinating everything.""

Richard stepped forward.

"Michael, it's Richard Lawson.""

A pause.

Then Michael answered.

"Richard.""

Richard looked devastated.

"I should have told the truth five years ago.""

"Yes, you should have.""

"I was afraid.""

"So was Sarah. So was I. So was Daniel. Fear doesn't make what you did right.""

Richard lowered his head.

"I understand.""

Michael continued.

"Peter has the records. He's planning to destroy them tonight.""

The investigator immediately reached for his phone.

"Where is he?""

Michael gave an address.

A private warehouse near the old hospital district.

The investigator contacted his supervisor and requested assistance.

I looked at James.

"We're going.""

The investigator shook his head.

"Mr. Carter, this is a police operation now. You need to stay here.""

I looked at him.

"Michael is alive. I am not waiting another five years to see him.""

He hesitated.

Then he nodded.

"Fine. But you remain with the officers.""

We drove toward the warehouse.

The rain had stopped, leaving the roads shiny beneath the streetlights.

Victoria sat in the second vehicle with Richard.

Emily rode beside me.

For several minutes, neither of us spoke.

Then she whispered, "Do you think my mother knew Michael would survive?""

"I think she hoped.""

Emily looked down.

"She spent her last few months worrying about me and Noah. She never mentioned any of this.""

I turned toward her.

"Your mother made sure the truth survived. That's a remarkable thing.""

She nodded.

"She always said that doing the right thing wasn't about getting applause.""

I smiled.

"She was right.""

We arrived at the warehouse shortly before midnight.

Police vehicles surrounded the building.

A security officer directed us toward the entrance.

Then we heard shouting.

A metal door slammed.

Two officers rushed around the corner.

"He's inside!""

We followed at a distance.

Through the open warehouse door, I saw a man throwing boxes into an industrial shredder.

Peter Wallace.

"Police! Step away from the equipment!""

Peter turned.

For one second, he looked toward the exit.

Then he ran.

An officer caught him near the loading dock.

Peter struggled.

"Get off me! You have no idea who you're dealing with!""

The officers forced him to the ground.

I moved closer.

"Peter!""

He turned his head.

His expression changed when he saw me.

"Daniel Carter.""

"Where are the records?""

He laughed.

"You're too late.""

I looked toward the shredder.

Several documents were already inside.

James examined the remaining boxes.

"Some of these are intact.""

The investigator approached Peter.

"You're under arrest for evidence destruction and suspected financial crimes. We will be asking you about the accident involving Daniel Carter and Michael Carter.""

Peter suddenly stopped laughing.

Then he looked directly at me.

"You still don't understand, do you?""

I frowned.

"Understand what?""

He leaned toward me as the officers pulled him upright.

"Andrew didn't arrange that accident because of the money.""

My stomach tightened.

"Then why?""

Peter smiled.

"Because Michael had discovered who really owned the stolen patient database.""

I stared at him.

"Who?""

Peter looked past me.

Toward Victoria.

Then toward Richard.

Finally, he whispered:

"Daniel, the original database was registered under your name.""

I felt the blood drain from my face.

"What?""

Peter nodded.

"Your signature is on every transfer.""

"That's impossible.""

"Ask your lawyer.""

I turned toward James.

He was examining a document.

His expression changed.

"Daniel...""

"What?""

He held up a contract.

The signature at the bottom was mine.

But I had never seen the document before.

The date was five years earlier.

The agreement authorized the transfer of confidential rehabilitation patient records to Meridian Health Analytics.

And beneath my signature was a second name.

Andrew Bennett.

I looked at the investigator.

"That signature is forged.""

Peter laughed.

"Then you'll have to prove it.""

Before anyone could respond, my phone vibrated.

A message from an unknown number appeared.

*You found Michael. You found the recordings. Now find out why your own signature is on the original contract.*

A second message followed.

*Ask your former fiancée who signed the witness statement.*

I looked up.

Victoria was standing beside the warehouse entrance.

Her face had gone completely white.

"Victoria?""

She began shaking her head.

"Daniel, please...""

I held up the phone.

"What did you sign five years ago?""

She covered her mouth.

Then, through tears, she whispered:

"The document that made you responsible for everything.""

And suddenly, I understood.

May you like

The person who had destroyed my reputation might not have been Andrew alone.

It might have been the woman who once promised to spend the rest of her life with me.
