Chapter 6: The Phone That Changed Everything

Lauren crossed the ballroom before anyone could stop her.

“What's going on?””

Monica closed the folder.

“Ms. Whitmore, we're reviewing a financial authorization submitted under Denise Carter's account.””

Lauren glanced at the screen.

“Okay?””

Monica remained professional.

“The verification log shows the approval originated from a device registered to your phone.””

Lauren laughed.

“That's impossible.””

“Do you own an iPhone registered under your name?””

“Obviously.””

“Did you access Ms. Carter's sponsor account yesterday?””

“No.””

Monica nodded.

“Then we'll need to establish how your device was associated with the submission.””

Lauren looked at Denise.

“This is ridiculous. Your system must be wrong.””

Denise didn't respond.

Lauren turned to Brandon.

“Are you going to stand there?””

He looked at the document.

“Lauren, did you use my mother's account?””

“No!””

“Then why does the hotel have your phone listed?””

“I don't know!””

Robert appeared behind her.

“What's the problem?””

Monica introduced herself and explained the issue.

Robert immediately became defensive.

“This is a private family event. You don't have permission to investigate our devices.””

Monica remained calm.

“We're reviewing a payment authorization submitted through our financial system. We have a responsibility to verify its legitimacy.””

Robert pointed toward Denise.

“She approved the original contract. We simply made an administrative adjustment.””

Denise looked at him.

“Then why did you need my signature?””

Robert's expression tightened.

“Because the hotel required it.””

“And why did you use Lauren's phone?””

He didn't answer.

Monica closed her folder.

“We'll need to retain the relevant records and suspend the reimbursement request pending review.””

Lauren's eyes widened.

“You can't do that!””

“We can, and we have.””

Robert stepped forward.

“Do you understand the kind of clients my company works with?””

Monica nodded.

“Yes, sir. But our financial procedures apply equally to every client.””

Robert's face turned red.

“Fine. I'll speak with your president.””

Richard stepped beside her.

“Our president has already been informed.””

That silenced him.

Brandon took Lauren by the arm.

“Come with me.””

She pulled away.

“Don't touch me.””

“We need to talk.””

“About what? Your mother making a scene?””

“About the signature.””

Lauren looked at him.

“I told you I didn't do anything.””

“Then unlock your phone.””

Her eyes widened.

“What?””

“Show them the email or the authorization. If you didn't submit it, prove it.””

She stared at him as if he had slapped her.

“You want me to hand over my phone?””

“If it clears this up.””

Lauren laughed bitterly.

“Wow. Your mother really has turned you against me.””

Brandon shook his head.

“I'm asking a simple question.””

“And I'm telling you that you're embarrassing me.””

He looked at her for several seconds.

Then he lowered his voice.

“Lauren, I need you to tell me the truth.””

She glanced at Robert.

Her father gave her a small shake of the head.

That tiny movement didn't escape Brandon.

“Why are you looking at your father?””

Lauren's voice became sharp.

“Because he's the only person here who's actually trying to protect me!””

Brandon stepped back.

“Protect you from what?””

She didn't answer.

Instead, she walked toward the ladies' restroom.

Robert followed her.

Brandon stood alone.

Across the room, Denise was speaking quietly with Monica.

He wanted to go to his mother.

He wanted to apologize.

But something was beginning to frighten him.

Not the money.

Not the hotel.

It was the realization that he might not know the woman he planned to marry.

Inside the restroom, Lauren locked herself in a private stall.

Her hands shook as she opened her phone.

She searched her email.

The authorization request was still there.

She had uploaded it the previous afternoon, just as her father instructed.

He had told her it was harmless.

“Your future mother-in-law is paying for the party anyway,” Robert had said.

“We're just moving some expenses through the proper channels.””

Lauren had asked whether Denise knew.

Robert had laughed.

“She doesn't need to know every business detail.””

Now that sentence sounded different.

She scrolled through the messages.

There were several from her father.

The latest one read:

*Do not show anyone the original emails. Delete the reimbursement thread if necessary. I'll handle the hotel.*

Lauren stared at the screen.

Her father was asking her to delete evidence.

She heard the restroom door open.

“Lauren?””

It was Patricia.

“I'm in here.””

“Come out, sweetheart.””

Lauren unlocked the stall.

Her mother stood beside the sinks.

“Did you use Denise's account?””

Lauren looked away.

“Dad handled everything.””

“That's not what I asked.””

Lauren's eyes filled.

“Mom, I didn't know it was going to become a problem.””

Patricia stepped closer.

“Did you sign anything?””

“I uploaded the authorization.””

“Was Denise aware?””

Lauren said nothing.

Patricia closed her eyes.

“Oh, Lauren.””

“Don't start.””

“Your father told me this was a simple reimbursement arrangement.””

Lauren looked up.

“Then why is everyone acting like we committed a crime?””

Patricia took a breath.

“Because using someone else's financial credentials without permission is serious.””

Lauren's voice dropped.

“Dad said it was fine.””

Her mother stared at her.

“Your father says a lot of things are fine when he wants someone else to take the risk.””

Lauren looked genuinely frightened now.

“Mom, what do I do?””

Patricia reached for her daughter's hand.

“Tell the truth.””

Lauren pulled away.

“And destroy my engagement?””

Patricia's expression became sad.

“Sweetheart, if the truth destroys it, perhaps it was already broken.””

Meanwhile, Denise sat in a quiet hotel office with Monica and Richard.

A cup of untouched tea sat on the desk.

Monica had printed the authorization records.

“We've identified three separate documents submitted through the sponsor portal,” she explained.

Denise looked at them.

“The reimbursement request, the revised sponsorship acknowledgment, and the seating modification?””

“Correct.””

“Were all three submitted from the same device?””

“Yes.””

Denise rubbed her forehead.

“Can you confirm whether the original contract was altered?””

Monica shook her head.

“No. Your original agreement remains intact.””

Richard leaned forward.

“Denise, there's another reason we wanted to meet with you privately.””

She looked at him.

“What is it?””

Monica opened another file.

“This concerns the invoices submitted by Whitmore Hospitality Consulting.””

Denise studied the first page.

The invoice listed transportation, event management, entertainment coordination, and client hospitality.

But there was something strange.

The dates of service didn't match the engagement party.

One transportation charge was dated two weeks earlier.

Another was for an event held in a different city.

Denise frowned.

“Why are these being submitted under tonight's event?””

Monica tapped the document.

“That is what we're investigating.””

Richard shook his head.

“Our accounting department noticed duplicate invoice numbers.””

Denise looked up.

“Duplicate?””

“The same invoice number appears on a separate expense submission associated with another corporate client.””

Denise slowly put the papers down.

“So this wasn't simply about my engagement gift.””

“We can't make that determination yet,” Monica replied.

“But the documents raise questions that go beyond this event.””

Denise nodded.

“Then investigate them properly.””

Monica closed the folder.

“We will.””

Richard looked at Denise.

“Are you still comfortable allowing the party to continue?””

Denise considered the guests.

Many had traveled from out of town. Some were elderly relatives. Others were friends who had nothing to do with the situation.

“Yes. Let them celebrate.””

“And the final payment?””

Denise looked at the contract.

“Don't process any unauthorized charges. I'll review the legitimate balance after the event.””

Richard nodded.

Then Monica added something unexpected.

“There's one more item. The original sponsor agreement includes an additional event provision.””

Denise frowned.

“What provision?””

Monica turned to the last page.

“Because you paid for the event through your corporate account, you requested that any unused portion of the contracted services be credited to your company's hospitality account.””

Denise nodded.

“I remember.””

“The hotel has calculated that the actual services delivered so far are substantially below the package value.””

Denise looked at the figures.

“Why?””

“Several services were never provided. The premium transportation package was never activated, and the entertainment upgrade was canceled before the event.””

Denise looked at Richard.

“Who canceled it?””

He checked the file.

“Lauren Whitmore.””

Denise leaned back.

“And was the contract price adjusted?””

“No.””

Monica pointed to the original invoice.

“That's another matter our team needs to review.””

Denise stared at the document.

The party had become something she no longer recognized.

When Denise returned to the ballroom, Brandon was waiting near the entrance.

“Mom.””

She stopped.

“Are you all right?””

He nodded, although his face looked exhausted.

“Can we talk?””

Denise glanced toward the guests.

“Of course.””

They stepped into the hallway.

Brandon spoke first.

“I found out Lauren uploaded the reimbursement request.””

Denise remained silent.

“She says her father told her to do it.””

“Did she admit using my account?””

He hesitated.

“She admitted uploading the document.””

Denise nodded.

“That's a start.””

“Mom, I don't know what to think.””

“Then don't rush to think anything. Find out the truth.””

He looked at her.

“Are you going to cancel the wedding?””

Denise studied him.

“Why would you ask me that?””

“Because if you withdraw your support, Lauren says we won't be able to afford the wedding we've planned.””

Denise looked at him for a long moment.

“Brandon, is that what you're worried about?””

He shook his head.

“No. I mean—”

“You're worried about losing the wedding?””

“I'm worried about losing everything.””

Denise's expression softened.

“Then perhaps you should decide what everything means.””

He looked down.

A moment later, the ballroom doors opened.

Lauren emerged with her mother.

Her makeup was perfect, but her eyes were red.

She walked straight toward Denise.

“I want to apologize.””

Denise waited.

Lauren swallowed.

“I shouldn't have spoken to you the way I did.””

“That's true.””

“And I shouldn't have moved your name on the seating chart.””

“That's true too.””

Lauren glanced at Brandon.

“Can we please put this behind us?””

Denise studied her.

“Have you told the hotel everything about the authorization?””

Lauren's expression changed.

“I told them what they needed to know.””

“That isn't what I asked.””

Lauren's jaw tightened.

“Denise, I am trying to make peace.””

“Peace requires honesty.””

Lauren looked away.

Then she said something that made Denise's stomach tighten.

“My father has already spoken to his attorney. He says the hotel is misunderstanding the entire arrangement.””

Denise nodded.

“Then we'll let the documents speak.””

Lauren stepped closer.

“Please. Don't ruin Brandon's future because of a business disagreement.””

Denise looked at her.

“My son had a future before he met you.””

Lauren's eyes flashed.

“You think you're better than me because you have money?””

“No.””

“Then why are you doing this?””

Denise's voice remained calm.

“Because I know what it feels like to work for every dollar you earn. I know what it feels like to sign your name to something and be responsible for it. And I know that a person's integrity is worth more than any engagement party.””

Lauren's face hardened.

She turned toward Brandon.

“Are you going to let her keep talking to me like this?””

Brandon opened his mouth.

Then he stopped.

For the first time, he didn't immediately rush to protect Lauren from the consequences of her own behavior.

Denise noticed.

So did Lauren.

“Fine,” Lauren whispered.

She turned and walked back toward the ballroom.

But before she reached the doors, her phone rang.

She glanced at the screen.

Her father's name appeared.

She answered.

“What?””

Robert's voice was loud enough for Brandon to hear.

“Get out of the hotel immediately.””

Lauren froze.

“Why?””

“Because someone from the corporate office has just called me.””

“What did they say?””

Robert paused.

Then he said something that drained the color from her face.

“They've found the other invoice.””

Lauren looked toward Denise.

Brandon noticed her expression.

“What other invoice?”” he asked.

Lauren didn't answer.

Robert continued speaking through the phone.

“And Lauren, whatever you do, don't tell them about the money we transferred last month.””

The call ended.

Brandon stared at her.

“Lauren?””

She gripped her phone.

Denise took one step forward.

“What money?””

Lauren's lips trembled.

And for the first time that evening, she looked less like an angry bride and more like someone who had just realized the truth was much bigger than the lie she had told.

May you like

Because there was another invoice.

And apparently, there was money that had already disappeared.
